Pixxures Completes MarinMap Parcel Rectification
Adjusted Parcel Data Enhances MarinMap’s Imagery Investment

Arvada, Colorado, May 7, 2007 - Pixxures, Inc., a leading provider of aerial mapping, direct digital image processing, GIS services and imagery web services, has successfully completed a parcel rectification project for MarinMap.

MarinMap is a consortium of public agencies that maintains a shared data center, housing geographic information about Marin County, CA for the benefit of the membership and the public. The Assessor parcel layer had been digitized over a period of years with reference to low-resolution printed images of orthophotos. The County’s recent high-resolution imagery showed that the parcel geometry had poor coordinate correspondence with the ortho boundaries. As a result, the composite map contained inaccuracies that made it difficult to rectify the parcel data to the county’s new digital orthophotography.

“Other visible features such as fences and pavement showed that parcel coordinates were not as precise as we wanted them to be," said Fred Vogler, GIS Coordinator of Marin County, CA. "The effect was that we could not show parcel boundaries (and other digital layers derived from parcels) with the new digital orthophotos. We knew that public and professional users wanted to see those layers with the ortho," added Vogler.

The MarinMap project consisted of over 60,000 parcel polygons, an AutoCAD DWG base map of parcel line work and additional spatial layers that needed to be rectified to the parcels in the base map. The vector data represented multiple layers of roads, parcels, ROW’s, zoning, condos and various district boundaries.

Pixxures utilized its proprietary vector alignment technology, LineWorks®, to align the parcels and adjust all the other layers to the imagery. "We created a new condo common area and a mobile home pad layer for MarinMap that would fit with the parcel layer," said Wendy Luck, Senior Program Manager of Pixxures, Inc. "The goal was to have the parcels 'look good' when lined up with the imagery. All additional layers had to maintain their correct relationships to the parcel layer after the adjustment," added Luck.

Pixxures’ LineWorks technology replaces traditional "rubber-sheeting" processes by creating links on common features between the vector layer and the image or land base. Vector layers are adjusted on the fly with each added, removed, or edited link providing immediate feedback to the operator. LineWorks is offered as a service, or the software can be purchased with or without training for the users to perform the alignment themselves.

"Pixxures offered us a means to align the parcels and all derivative layers with the coordinate geometry of the digital orthophotos at a price our organization could afford," said Vogler. "The benefits are credibility and inherent usefulness. Now we can show the layers with the orthophotos with some credibility as to the relative precision of the coordinates," added Vogler.
