INTELLIGENT ALIGNMENT - Pixxures' LineWorks Software Fits the Bill
Disparate data layers are a thing of the past
Arvada, Colorado, December 2005 - Pixxures, Inc., a leading provider of aerial mapping, direct digital image processing, and imagery web services, has released its vector alignment software, LineWorks®, for licensing into the commercial market. The LineWorks technology replaces traditional vector alignment processes such as “rubber sheeting” that often compromise data integrity and prohibit consistent adjustment of associated annotation. The LineWorks software is a standalone package that does not require additional licenses of GIS/CAD software. LineWorks works both in the Linux and Windows environments and supports numerous external data formats.
LineWorks was first developed by Pixxures for in-house use on customer projects such as Jefferson County, Colorado to align their parcel data with their newly acquired 1-foot pixel imagery. “Many of our customers were dealing with similar problems. Pixxures leveraged our technical resources in-house to engineer a tool that will enable us to provide vector alignment efficiently and accurately,” explains President and CEO Chuck Killpack. “A number of our customers asked us to perform the initial vector alignment of their existing GIS data layers with imagery or landbase maps, but also asked that we provide them with a copy of our software for use in maintaining the data once we completed the project. It was for this reason that we made the decision to release the software as a fully supported COTS package.”
Time Warner Cable recently purchased licenses of the LineWorks software after trying different rubber sheeting applications without success. “Our vector data was in the wrong scale, location and didn’t match the ‘real world’ coordinates. We discovered Pixxures’ LineWorks technology at a User Conference and found it to be the easiest and fastest solution to our problems. We are now able to perform spatial queries for a variety of different applications with accurate results,” explains CAD Coordinator & Senior Drafter, Gina Wortman.
The goal of the in-house effort to develop LineWorks, was to create a software so user friendly and task driven that it would allow Pixxures to compete with other companies that were sending data offshore for alignment. This remarkable effort has resulted in a very task efficient software that is easy to use, accurate, and optimizes the user’s interaction with both the data and the functionality. The operator places control links on common features between the vector layer and the image or land base. The vector layer is adjusted on the fly with each added, removed or edited link, providing immediate feedback to the operator.
LineWorks uniquely enables large shifts of inaccurate data adjacent to relatively accurate data, requiring only small shifts, without affecting data integrity. The links can be copied to ensure consistent shifts and entire “blocks” of data can be moved at once. The link file is not resident in the GIS data layer in which it was created, but exists as a separate file that can be edited and applied to any associated GIS layers
The LineWorks technology uniquely enables the intelligent alignment of multiple data layers, maintaining associated annotation and relative spatial data accuracy. “Our success with customers such as Time Warner Cable, Jefferson County, Colorado, USDA, US Census Bureau, Harris County Appraisal District and United Power, along with the frequent requests we were getting about licensing the software, made us realize the need for LineWorks in the marketplace,” said Killpack.
This marks the company’s first commercial release of their proprietary software, which includes complete user documentation, formal training classes, email and telephone support.
